Dear Sadiq Abacha,

I do not know you personally, but I admire your filial bravery—however misguided—in defending the honour of your father, the late General Sani Abacha. This in itself is not a problem; it is an obligation—in this cultural construct of ours—for children to rise to the defence of their parents, no matter what infamy or perfidy the said parent might have dabbled in.

The problem I have with your letter, however, arises from two issues: (i) your disparaging of Wole Soyinka, who—despite your referral to an anecdotal opinion that calls him as “a common writer”—is a great father figure, and a source of inspiration, to a fair number of us young Nigerians; and (ii) your attempt to revise Nigerian history and substitute our national experience with your personal opinions.

Therefore, it is necessary that we who are either Wole Soyinka’s “socio-political” children, or who are ordinary Nigerians…

Graduation speech

The following is the graduation speech I wrote for my university:

Dear fellow students, parents, brothers and sisters, children, faculty and staff: welcome to the graduation ceremony for the class of 2009. It is one of the four great days of medical school and I am honored to be given the chance to speak with you about the achievements of the 152 people who are graduating today. As a group we have published papers, presented at conferences, nailed a one-in-a-million diagnosis, gotten married, had children, and won the coed intramural volleyball championship.

These past four years will certainly be memorable to me for a very long time. Although it has taken us only four years to complete medical school, some of us have aged much more than that. Whenever I am at a bar and ordering a drink, I pull out my driver’s license to show my age only to…

When They Don’t Love You Back

Simply stated, we need to get rid of some players…it is that simple…arsenal flying now because they had to “shed weight”.. We have ImageToo many players in our squad that are below par. we need to get rid of them as well as look for credible replacement for the old pillars of the team. the Game against man city made it clear to all, changes has to be made. i am going to list the players that are not befitting of a team like United
1. Anderson
2. Young
3. Valencia
the next few are on the list but they get a little “pass” because they are still young
4. Cleverly
5. Welbeck
7. buttner
8. Evans
the old pillars that must leave/find replacements
8. Evra
9. Ferdinand
10. Giggs
we need to spend, focus on credible youth players. SAF’s magic is gone, the team must move on

I think digital textbooks are better than traditional textbooks. First of all, they represent a technological advancement with the goal of being conservative with the available natural resources. Digital or online textbooks are ecologically friendly as they do not require cutting of trees to make printing paper. They are also portable. Traditional textbooks are physically bigger, hefty and very heavy and can be worrisome for students. Online textbook options allow the students the ease of portability. Online books are also more accessible. Rather than going to bookstores, the ease of accessibility is afforded for online books with the use of the internet. Online books are also cheaper, and offer a better way of sharing information globally. For example, it is easier and cheaper to share books online around the world than actually sending printed books. Online resources and books are also editable and can be updated with new information and upgrades than the traditional books.  Also, there are audio textbooks which present a different option than the traditional textbooks, allowing students to listen to the books at any time. Also online textbooks also come with easy search tools, allowing students to quickly sieve through the books to get specific information. This is an upgrade on the traditional bibliography provided in traditional books which can take a long time with searching. There are other special features provided with digital textbooks not provided in traditional textbooks e.g.  Interactive models, moveable shapes and diagrams, videos etc.

Overall, while choosing either online textbook option or the traditional textbooks is an individual decision, the shift to a more technological based world makes it logical and reasonable to choose online textbooks than traditional textbooks.

Love Attitudes Scale

Get out a piece of paper. Number that piece of paper from 1 to 42. For each of the 42 statements, write down the number that most nearly describes your attitudes or beliefs. Some of the items refer to a specific love relationship, while others refer to general attitudes and beliefs about love. Whenever possible, answer the questions with your current partner in mind. If you are not currently dating, answer the questions with your most recent partner in mind. If you have never been in love or in a relationship before, answer in terms of what you think your responses would most likely be.

Man Proposes, God Disposes

Man proposes, God disposes

We all go through that phase during our early years where everything we want to be in the future becomes a calculation in our minds. We calculate when we finish from school, get a job, marry, and retire etc. in our heads. The reality however is that a lot of those plans do not come as planned. “Man proposes, God disposes” in my own words means that we make plans for the future but it is uncertain whether they will turn out the way we have planned. The saying “man proposes, God disposes” has had a personal link to me. When I was much younger, I had my future in calculation. I calculated when I would finish my education, become a successful medical doctor, marry my long time crush and live happily ever after. So much for a boy’s dreams! Right now, I am not in line with the timeline I set then but it will be fair to say that setting those goals has helped me up to this point. Having such ideas gave me set goals on what to accomplish in life and at a certain point and how to go about getting them. I am transferring with the aim to keep up with the goals that I set while I was much younger. I hope to finish up with the pre-med degree necessary for me to be a suitable candidate for a medical school, complete the other necessary requirements and get admitted. Hopefully I will have enough time to catch up on those goals I set some 13 years ago.
